When you encounter an obstacle, how do you respond? Do you think the world might be against you, and that nothing ever goes your way? Instead, you should be thinking about taking a step back, looking at the situation objectively and thinking, “What can I do to turn this obstacle into an advantage?” If we look at them in this way, even the biggest obstacles can be turned to our advantage. For example, in the 1960s the then celebrated boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter was falsely accused of a triple homicide, and sentenced to jail for life. But as he entered prison, he resolved to not let his circumstances overwhelm him, and instead tried to see how he could make the best of it. First, he vowed to not live with the injustice, but keep fighting to overcome it through the court of law. Then he turned his limited physical freedom to his advantage by using his time inside to study history, philosophy and law. Carter’s case was eventually overturned and he was released after 19 years. Carter left jail as he had entered it, a free man. But in addition, he had also used the time to improve his education and himself. So how can we achieve this objective perspective? By learning to detach yourself from your own personal – and highly subjective – view of the situation. You can do this by imagining that you are advising a friend about overcoming the obstacle. What would you say to them? How would you let them approach it? Or you can take after the Stoics, a group of philosophers from Ancient Greece. They would imagine how a sage – a person of perfect wisdom – would react to the obstacle. In that way, they would explore hidden sources of wisdom that they didn’t consciously know they had. Mom of 2 boys. All the mom duties PLUS now being a teacher/assistant to my 5 year old (virtual school ) PLUS running THREE businesses. It takes alotttttt out of me. I struggle ALOT. I literally have cried ALL morning because it’s just been one of those days already. But I got up. I got ready. I got my son on school. I got my 2 year old bathed and dressed and fed and now I’m on to working my businesses (in between absolute craziness ). There is ALWAYS an excuse to NOT do something. But instead of using that excuse to NOT do it, take that excuse and use it as a reason to PUSH harder and get shit done 💪🏼👊🏼 . . #mom #struggle #stress #love #momlife #workingmom #motherhood #workhard #businessowner #entrepreneur #boutique #monat #realtor #realestate #realestateagent #homeschool #virtuallearning #boymom

Mumbai Indians all-rounder Hardik Pandya has become the first player in the ongoing Indian Premier League to take a knee in support of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. Pandya’s gesture came during the game against Rajasthan Royals here on Sunday. The all-rounder smashed 60 run from just 21 balls. After reaching his half century in the 19th over, he went down on a knee with his right arm raised to show solidarity with the movement against racism. West Indies all-rounder and Mumbai’s stand-in skipper Kieron Pollard responded by raising his right fist. After the match Pandya even tweeted a picture of himself with the caption “ #BlackLivesMatter “. . . #thenewsrunway #news #india #indian #ipl #indianpremierleague #hardikpandya #mumbaiindians #viratkohli #rohitsharma #reliance #reliancejio #pollard #mi #life #blacklivesmatter #racism #struggle #cricket #sports #movement #rajasthan #rajasthanroyals #rr #ipl2020

Learning to please others, care take others, and prioritize the needs of others over oneself may have been necessary in childhood, especially if you learned that safety was connected with others' moods and behaviors. A child living in an environment that is unsafe, or who is having the experience of not having their needs met by their caregivers, will often learn to attend outward; they will learn that attending to others may give them a sense of stability or control; they will learn that ignoring their own needs is easier than feeling the pain of never having them met. 🤍 If we grew up having to silence, ignore, dismiss, or disregard ourselves and our needs, it may be challenging to assert or even know our needs as we enter into adulthood. This might mean that our relationships are likely to maintain the same patterns we once established; this might mean that we're habituated to caring for others at the cost of ourselves. 🤍 People-pleasing is often a learned response that is intended to keep us safe when we perceive a threat in our environment. This response can easily become generalized and thus we may find ourselves giving in, shifting to accommodate others, or simply deferring to others even when doing so doesn't align with our own needs and wants. We may find ourselves prioritizing others when we fear a loss of connection in our relationships. We may find ourselves prioritizing being nice, keeping the peace, and not causing waves, even when our truth doesn't align with the ways we may be responding to others. 🤍 We don't have to keep the peace for others at the cost of ourselves. We don't have to stay silent when we have things to say. We don't have to be nice rather than honest. We don't have to be the only one to give in or compromise. We don't have to be the caretaker when we're the ones needing care. We don't have to maintain patterns from childhood; we don't have to always do what we've always done. 🤍 To those of you learning to recognize and prioritize your needs in relationships, I see you.
