The U.S. Government announced on Friday that it will not #breachthedams on the Snake River to save endangered #salmon . Despite two decades of fighting to breach the dams and scientific evidence showing how they imperil #Chinook and #Blackfish #SRKW populations, they are simply re-hashing a tactic that had failed before; proposing to spill more water over the dams at strategic times to help fish migrate faster. A record of decision on the plan announced Friday will be released in September. In that time we must take action and speak up to ensure we #FreetheSnake . The #southernresidentorcas and salmon of the #SalishSea literally depend on it. Let us all send letters this weekend to everyone we can: National Fisheries Service, NOAA, US Army Corps of Engineers. Call Governor Inslee and ensure the dams are breached. Repost from @pnwprotectors ; please visit them for more ways to help. #RacingExtinction #stopextinction #nofishnoblackfish #southernresidentkillerwhales #washingtonstate #saveoursalmon #protectwhatyoulove #orcas

Some cracking fishing this week on the beat. Lots of happy guests and even better, every angler managed to get a fish. Also had one guest who had never fished before, after taking to casting like a duck to water he managed a brace of fish including a nice 10lber.

To save the endangered populations of #salmon and #steelhead in the Columbia and Snake rivers, the Oregon District Court tasked federal agencies with developing a comprehensive, fish-friendly plan for operating the Columbia River Hydrosystem, which comprises eight dams on the Columbia and Snake Rivers in Oregon and Washington. They released their "new" plan today, which closely resembles the past 5 plans that failed to restore fish runs or pass legal scrutiny. Read the full blog post and find out how you can take action today! Link in bio #saveoursalmon #removethedams

Episode 1 features The St. Mary’s River ——————————————————————————— "Perhaps in the whole of the Lower Provinces there does not exist so charming a river as this is. It is of great extent and its main stream is supplied by waters from two magnificent flows known as its East and West branches. The scenery along its margins is of great grandeur, and the graceful manner in which it winds through a vast extent of agricultural and natural meadowland, fully entitle it to be called 'The beautiful St. Mary's'". - Frederick Veith, 1868 . . . . #outdoormedia #flyfishingseries #flyfishingphotography #flow #novascotia #conservation #atlanticsalmon

Sent my dslr down the tributary. Footage of the pink salmon run fall 2019. #wildlifewednesday #saveoursalmon Excerpt from Endgame - Derrick Jensen The Gift of Salmon (p. 605 ) When I talk about taking out dams, I’m not “just” talking about liberating rivers, and I’m not “just” talking about saving salmon. I’m talking about forests and meadows and aquifers and everyone else whose home this was long before the arrival of civilization. I’m talking about those whose home this is. You cannot separate rivers from forests from meadows, and it’s foolish to think you can. If you kill rivers, you kill forests and meadows and everyone else. The same holds true for all parts of these relationships, in all directions. I’ve long known that salmon feed forests, but I did not know how dependent forests are on these fish until I read a luminous essay called The Gift of Salmon by Kathleen Dean Moore and her son Jonathan. The essay begins with part of a letter Jonathan wrote to his mother from Alaska, where salmon have not yet been destroyed by civilization: “The creek is so full of sockeye, it’s a challenge just to walk upstream. I stumble and skid on dead salmon washed up on the gravel bars. It’s like stepping on human legs. When I accidentally trip over a carcass, it moans, releasing trapped gas. In shallow water, fish slam into my boots. Spawned-out salmon, moldy and dying, drift down the current and nudge against my ankles. Glaucous-winged gulls swarm and scream upstream, a sign the grizzlies are fishing. The creek stinks of death.” The next summer, Kathleen went to visit the spot, now clean of salmon, and asked, “Where did the piles of dead salmon he witnessed go? What difference does their living and dying make to the health of the entire ecosystem?” As you know, salmon provide a tremendous influx of nutrients into the forest. They put on about 95 percent of their weight in the ocean, and carry this weight into the forest and die. Excerpt continued in the comments.

Kokanee salmon spend their entire lives in freshwater lakes instead of migrating to the ocean like their anadromous relative the Sockeye salmon. Kokanee and Mysis both perform vertical migrations, however, there is little overlap spatially. This means that the adult Kokanee get very little chance to prey on the Mysis whilst the Mysis gorge themselves on the same food source that the juvenile Kokanee rely on. #mysisshrimp #saveoursalmon #kokaneesalmon #beautifulbc #invasivespecies #abcOkanagan #LakeOkanagan #Okanaganlife #pemysis #fishery #BCfishing #okanaganlifestyle #okanaganvalley #freshwateraquarium #freshwatershrimp #fishtank #aquariumhobby #fishfood #bclakes #sustainable #sustainablefishing #sustainablefish #aquaticnutrition #sustainableaquaculture

J-35 of the critically endangered J-Pod is pregnant again👏🏽👏🏽Remember her when she lost her baby and carried it with her around the Salish Sea for 17 days for over 1600 km’s!! That was just shy of two years ago. The world watched and greived with her, and she has another chance at Motherhood. If you see the Southern Resident Whales stay away from them completely. Only take pictures from shore or not at all, unless your surprised, then shut down and leave when its safe to do so. All of J, K & L pod are in a precarious position with only 72 members left, they need our cooperation and mindfulness. They need your voice more than ever, write and call your MP’s and the DFO tell them #srkws matter to you and their food source must be protected along with noise pollution in their critical habitat. We hope more is done soon to protect them. @fisheriesoceanscan @bernadettejordanmp @johnhorgan4bc @greenpartybc #getfishfarmsout #saveoursalmon #srkw #pnw #salishsea #killerwhales #southernresidentorcas #jpod #protectwhatyoulove #ilovewhales #fishpeople #endangeredspecies #saveourseas

1.5 million salmon escaped from fish farms into the open sea in British Columbia between 1987 and 2008, a result of loose or damaged netting at the factory farms. And even more major breaches have happened in the past few years. These fish ('designer' salmon, bred as food and not to survive in the wild ) intermix with the local populations of wild salmon after they escape. The resulting offspring is less durable and less capable of survival. Farmed salmon are also often crammed into tight and dirty conditions, and are more likely than wild salmon to be carrying disease and parasites. If you want to help prevent breaches of farmed salmon, you can make changes to your own purchasing habits. Support wild-caught salmon and buy from eco-friendly farms (check out our program @getwild_tofino ). You can also help push for reforms that require better conditions for farmed fish and hold fish farmers accountable for the damage caused by sick fish released into open water. Send a letter to your MP in the link in our bio! #tofino #wildsalmon #saveoursalmon #conservation #redgreenandblue #getwild #bcsalmon

Today marks the start of the second anniversary of the “Tour of Grief” that Tahlequah, a member of the J pod, embarked upon. Her young calf died shorty after birth, so Tahlequah carried the body for 17 days, covering 1,000 miles, over doubling the last known record for a mother orca carrying their deceased offspring. ⁣ ⁣ Tahlequah sent us all a grave message, warning of the future to come if the orca pods’ food source continues to be scarce. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #tourofgrief #tahlequah #j35 #orca #orcacalf #orcaart #killerwhale #pugetsound #salishsea #jpod #pnw #pnwartist #pacificnorthwest #killerwhaleart #blackfish #inkdrawing #inkart #saveoursalmon #nofishnoblackfish #sanjuanislands #sanjuanislandart #localartist

TAKE ACTION TO SAVE BRISTOL BAY WILD SALMON 🏔💔🏔 Like the central stone that holds together an arch, a keystone species holds together an ecosystem. That’s the role of wild salmon in the North Pacific. Salmon feed over 130 species in the Pacific Northwest alone. 🗣 The US Army Corps of Engineers just released their Final Environmental Impact Statement, opening the door to a permit to build Pebble Mine. Guido Rahr, CEO of @wildsalmoncenter said today: “The science is clear: this mine is indefensible. It cannot be safely built without harming the fishery in Bristol Bay. And a catastrophic tailings dam failure would release toxic waste that would affect the long-term productivity of salmon fisheries. It’s just too big a risk to take. And it’s time for the EPA to step in and stop this mine.” The only way to stop it is to act now. Tell the EPA to #VetoPebbleMine . See link in profile 👆🏼to do just that. This will be our last shot! . . . #protectwhatyoulove #wildsalmon #keystonespecies #bristolbay #bristolbaysockeye #protectanddefend #wildplaces #saveoursalmon #nopebblemine #salmonfeedseveryone #salmonaresacred #alskasalmon #bristolbayaerial 🎥 @catersclips

Where have I heard of Mysis diluviana? Ah yes, Piscine Energetics. The freshwater shrimp Mysis diluviana was introduced into Okanagan Lake in 1966 with the intention of providing rainbow trout and kokanee salmon populations with a self-sustaining macrozooplantor food source. Instead Mysis outcompeted the juvenile Kokanee for their main food source having devastating impacts on the Kokanee population. Every time you feed your fish PE products, you are helping to restore the native Kokanee population in BC by removing their invasive competitor. #mysisshrimp #saveoursalmon #kokaneesalmon #beautifulbc #invasivespecies #abcOkanagan #LakeOkanagan #Okanaganlife #pemysis #fishery #BCfishing #okanaganlifestyle #okanaganvalley #freshwateraquarium #freshwatershrimp #fishtank #aquariumhobby #fishfood #bclakes #sustainable #sustainablefishing #sustainablefish #aquaticnutrition #sustainableaquaculture

Did you know our lake had shrimp? Lake Okanagan is 135km of freshwater, nestled into the surrounding mountains of the Okanagan valley. In some places it is as deep as 760ft! As you can imagine, this depth means that there is a LOT of space for species to coexist. Kokanee salmon and Mysis shrimp perform opposing verticle migrations; Kokanee go down at night, and Mysis go up. In a lake this deep that means there isn’t much time where the Kokanee are at the same depth as, and able to eat, the Mysis. Furthermore, there is a lot of time for Mysis to eat the zooplankton that juvenile Kokanee rely on as their key food source. In Lake Okanagan, Mysis outcompete juvenile Kokanee. #fishery #BCfishing #mysisshrimp #saveoursalmon #kokaneesalmon #beautifulbc #invasivespecies #abcOkanagan #LakeOkanagan #Okanaganlife #pemysis #okanaganlifestyle #okanaganvalley #adventure #sunset #fishtank #aquariumhobby #fishfood #bclakes #sustainable #sustainablefishing #sustainablefish #aquaticnutrition #sustainableaquaculture

Northern resident killer whales in Johnstone Straight. What do grizzly bear guides do at the end of the season on the first day off after a busy 5 months of 6-day shifts, 5am wake-ups, working until 4pm (at least ), and being on the water almost every day? They get up at 5am and borrow a tiny boat to find some sunrise whales of course!
