I've been teaching myself a new method for deriving Transfer Functions of circuits using what are called Incidence matrices. When trying to analyze the transfer function of the Big Muff Pi Tonestack, I was having troubles thinking of a convenient way to take the two parallel impedance branches (1 for HP section and 1 for LP section ) and turning them into a classic Voltage Divider like transfer function. I found some code from Ben Holmes which utilizes a technique I've not seen called Incidence matrices to define the nodal connections of the circuit (each column is a node, so 5 nodes ). He's already gotten the Tonestack modelled, but it also is being terminated by the 0.1uF coupling cap and loaded down with a 100k resistor in parallel with a 100pF capacitor. The 100k and 100pF simulate the final gain stage biasing and provide a more accurate representation to how the final output stage transitor loads the tonestack filter (coupled through the 0.1uF ). I was initially curious about looking at JUST the response of the tonestack to see how the HP loads down the LP section and versa, as the 100kohm tone pot does not provide infinite isolation between the two filters. So I've been reverse engineering his code to determine the topology of his circuit and figure out how his function works. I'm just about done and soon I'll be able to break this down into a simpler version that just looks at the Tonestack. I wonder what the math does when the pot output is left unterminated and is just left floating. Either way, I've still learned a powerful new way to model circuits using matrices to get the Transfer Function. Reminds me of building Systems of Equations into matrices for doing Mesh Analysis (loop currents ) and Nodal Analysis (nodal voltages ). I am addicted to online courses and being a "student", soaking up "all the knowledge", all of the time. Knowledge is power. BUT, at some point you must take action on what you've learned or you won't move forward. You'll be stuck in a rut of constantly studying or training, afraid to take the next step, worried you need to read just ONE more slice of information before taking any action. You think you'll do something wrong, that you don't know everything you think you need to know yet, so you are in analysis paralysis. Are you like this? I mean, I know I'm an oddball and a dork, but I KNOW I can't be the only one who studies, researches, and does training ALL THE TIME. You should see my desks. Yes, that's plural. I have three of them, nothing fancy, completely covered with INFORMATION... books, notebooks, printed out roadmaps, 3-ring binders, clipboards with checklists, it goes on... eeeekkk!! It's overwhelming. Sometimes, I don't know what to look at first... what to dive into. Yet, I'm always saying how organized I am... And I AM organized, it just looks messy, with so many PILES of stuff, but I can FIND anything! LOL! I'm also diagnosed ADHD and OCD - which doesn't help! *oh look - squirrel!* I've been getting a wee bit better over the last few months, but I'm still a work in progress. Lots of checklists, scheduling work on my calendar, trying to scale back on social media scrolling, using timers, etc. There's the saying, "Progress not perfection." So, I need to keep progressing (equals take action ) and not worry about every little thing being perfect. Right?! Do something that moves the needle! (continued...... )
