The most asked question I get is, how did you lose all the weight though? Which if I’m being honest, makes me sad because I want the focus of my page to be about realizing your worth at every point in your life. Heaviest, thinnest, happiest, saddest, and all the in between. About knowing it’s okay to not love your body all the time, but to at least respect it. But I guess it could be misconstrued when I post pictures like this. That are seemingly a before and after pic. Which technically speaking they are. But that’s not the purpose of them. The purpose of these are to share my mental health journey. My journey to self love. My realization that I have been worthy at every point in my life. I have been accused of a multitude of ways I lost weight. Which hurts. But as I’ve shared in the past, my weight has always been directly correlated to where I’m at with my mental health. The toxicity of diet culture has never helped my mental health. I would try every diet in the book. But no diet is sustainable. And diets are made for you to drop weight but not keep it off. I stopped the toxic cycle of dieting and started to eat intuitively. Like I’ve said I’ve started to make my mental health a priority. I note understand the correlation between mental health and physical health. I know that to be healthy, I need to take care of my mental health. My body is not perfect. There are still days I hate what I see. But I have come such a long way in my journey that I refuse to continue hating myself. Or hating my body for not looking exactly how I want. Or hating my mind for not being totally normal. Instead I choose to love myself. Respect myself. To not settle. To eat when I want. To move when I feel the need. To say no to things when I don’t have the energy. Rosenberg I have begun to believe in this although I haven’t full accepted it myself. But my belief comes from my experiences. A couple of years ago I had an opportunity to teach storytelling to a bunch of young prisoners in Tihar jail in Delhi. While I did not do a very good job of it…my interactions left me stunned and saddened. Some of these young men were there for crimes that left me baffled. One 17 year old boy stole Rs.800 from someone and was then caught and locked up. That’s about 10 US dollars. I usually carry more money in my wallet. I also had a hard time teaching them because almost all of them were illiterate. And since I know about government run schools…I know the education system failed them. And yet I also realised in that moment…if I met that young man outside the prison, to me he would be an ex-con. Someone I would judge for doing what he did. Someone who I would perhaps feel threatened by. And now there is guilt within me. Guilt for my privilege and the judgment that comes from it. Also guilt because I don’t know if I would’ve fared any differently if I were in his shoes. Because I too have made many mistakes…I have done things I am not proud of. And I have learnt things about myself I am not proud of. And I can’t go back and fix things…and judging myself doesn’t help. I have earned what I know…and I will use that to do the work I need to do. And I hope that as I learn to judge myself less, I can do so with those around me too. It’s slow, it’s also painful. Now vs. 3 Months Ago —> There is a WORLD of difference in my mindset and overall happiness between these two pictures.🌎 3 months ago I was at one of my lowest points with my mental health, love for myself, and my eating habits. I was binging at night, not working out, depressed, horribly self conscious, and my quality of life was being diminished by the fact all that I could think about was my self hatred🤢 So what changed?💫 The start of my mental health and self love journey was me taking the time to do little things my body would thank me for.🌸 Probably the BIGGEST thing that has helped me on my self love journey is making the time to be active🏃🏼‍♀️ When I was at my lowest, I didn’t do anything aside from sit on the couch and stare at my phone. And don’t get me wrong, this still makes me happy to do on occasion! Day 49/100: There is no one “right” way to show up right now. Life has always been uncertain, but now it’s especially pronounced. That can have us feeling stuck, fearful, distracted, anxiously holding it together or we may just be numb. However, we always have the option of being honest in where we are at...and showing up fully. With our whole hearts. Everything else is really just a shield; protecting us from constant heartbreak. But what does courage look like in a time of fear and uncertainty? Courage is showing up with a full heart. But when you wanna turn back, try thinking about what you’re fighting for. . When you look back on your life, what do you want to see? Years of counting almonds? Days spent hopping on and off the scale? Nights spent skipping the dinners with friends to exercise alone? . No. Freakin. Way. I don’t know about you, but when I’m 88 I want to look back on life and remember how much I loved, the impact I made, and how hard I laughed. . This week was mental health awareness week week in New Zealand. A week where the incredible folk at @mhfnz work tirelessly to share, support and educate us about mental health here in Aotearoa. This doesn’t stop today, tomorrow or next week. They don’t stop. We shouldn’t stop. There is a stigma around sharing your mental health battle and journey and that needs to stop. When the society adopts a certain image with subtle characteristics, often negative, upon a specific group of people it’s called a stereotype. Stigmatization is a complex phenomenon that has political and social influences. It stops people asking for help when they need it most. As someone who has battled tirelessly over the years with my own mind I never thought I would be in a position to help, share my story and be there for those who need me. At my lowest point I felt completely alone, I couldn’t see the end of it and I was on a spiral. That was until I surrounded myself with those that would listen, broke my silence and sought help. Our collective voice should sound like bravery, strength and persistence. All qualities we need to face and fight the stigma surrounding mental health. No matter how you contribute to any mental health movement, by asking your mates if they are okay, checking on your Whanau every day, or if you need checking on, pick up the phone and call someone, anyone. You can make a difference simply by knowing that mental illness is not anyone’s fault, no matter what societal stigma says. You got this friends, you got this ✨
