After only 3 hours of sleep and the alarm going off at 4:00, you’d think I’d be angry and upset. Also, today I’m going to ride my bike 113 miles today and gain over 6,600 feet of elevation... BUT, I’m SMILING EAR TO EAR!!!! #imracing A few thousand friends and I are racing an actual real life race. First one of 2020. Next Sunday I get to celebrate 2 years sober. Help your watch help you! ⬇ Sports technology has really evolved over the past couple of years. We have more metrics than ever to help us train, predict our performance and recovery. Only ten years ago we were all mostly confined to four primary metrics, heart rate, pace, bike power and rating of perceived exertion. Now the data is somewhat limitless. All of these advancements in technology are great, yet they are not all going to make you better and trying to hone in on all can just leave you feeling confused. While training there are a lot of metrics to look at, how do you know if you are getting good data? For swimming, here is a tip to ensure you get accurate numbers from your training: When using your watch in the pool first be sure you have the correct pool size entered. When taking rest intervals or grabbing gear off the swim deck be sure to hit the rest/stop(depending on what watch you have ) button to ensure no extra distance is added. In addition if you are performing swim drills be sure to use the drill mode if your watch has the feature - this will help you better keep track of your total distance during the workout. “I don’t want my pain and struggle to make me a victim. I want my battle to make me someone else’s hero.” -Anonymous *I'm using an old picture, but please be patient and you'll understand why. My triathlon "career" has had it's bumps and bruises starting from my very first triathlon. Just 5 days before the Auburn Mini Triathlon in 2014 I rolled my right ankle and tore a ligament. I limped across the finish line after a very slow day. In 2016 I completed my first two Ironman 70.3 (Vineman and Santa Cruz ) on a torn meniscus in my right knee and a neuroma in my right foot. I had knee surgery in February of 2017 and 11 weeks later I finished Ironman Santa Rosa 70.3. Then 15 weeks after that, I completed Ironman Santa Rosa. In August of 2018 I had a car accident that required me to have spinal fusion surgery. Just 11 weeks after surgery I was already running and completed a 5km run the day before CIM. This morning I woke up to an email from my doctor, it's her belief that my blood work showed signs that I have Lupus. In 2007 I had some severely, unexplained swelling in my hands and wrists, but since then my blood work has been inconclusive. Unfortunately my autoimmune disorder may no longer be at bay. I'm not going to lie and say this diagnosis doesn't scare me, but at the end of the day I'm not going to allow it to control me. Do you plan on going longer (or doing your first triathlon! ) in 2021? If 2021 is the year you are looking to train for a longer distance than you have previously, (or your first triathlon! ) understanding how much time you will be committing to this new goal is important for setting up realistic expectations and time management techniques. Below we have put together a general guideline of how much consistent weekly training volume to expect for each distance of triathlon. Weekly training volume guidelines for each distance: *this can very greatly depending on your goals and time to train. Sprint Distance Triathlon,4-8 hours per week. You can expect to train 5-6 days a week. Plan to do each sport at least two times a week. Long session days can last up to 90 minutes. Training should be consistent. Olympic Distance Triathlon, 8-12+ hours per week: You can expect to train 6 or 7 days a week with the frequency and duration increased compared to training for a sprint triathlon. The duration of intensity also increases as compared to a sprint triathlon. Half IRONMAN 8-15+ hours per week: Plan to be able to commit at least 8 hours a week starting out. Depending on your goals and pace, long runs during peak training could be over 2 hours long and long bike + run days (Bricks ) could be up to 4 hours. IRONMAN 10-20+ hours per week: You can expect to maintain 10 hours a week starting out and ramping up to near 20 hours a week for peak training. Wasn't sure if I should post this, but honestly social media is almost always the "pretty and airbrushed" version of everything. But unfortunately we all know that's not real life. This is real, and unfortunately my reality. Yes I completed the IMVR Kona Challenge over the weekend, but here's the downfall, my left foot. Right now it's FUBAR, for those who recall Tango & Cash. Not 100% sure what's going on, it started around mile 12 yesterday and I just pushed through. Smart decision, I still think it was, I don't regret it at least. Now just waiting on a negative x-ray result, then if the swelling doesn't go down I'll go see a podiatrist, then I suppose a MRI. It's more than likely just something that requires rest, ice, and elevation. It's been a long weekend and now it's in the books. Well it's in my book and that's all that matters. I did a @davidgoggins and suffered through the run, walked the final 5km and walked at other times as well, but worth it. I'm not completely sure why my run suffers so much and I always curse as myself during them, but I come back for more. It's almost like I enjoy the pain, or maybe I simply embrace it. I signed up for this virtual event and had to finish it regardless of how much my left foot hurt. I have been driven to cross the finish line of @ironmantri AZ 2020. ⬇Fueling Early⬇ As endurance athletes we often have our first workout of the day completed before many others are awake. When rising for these early morning sessions our body needs fuel. I am often asked, “How much should I eat at 4:30 am” before going to the pool, hopping on the trainer or heading out for a run. Fueling very early in the morning has its challenges including not feeling hungry, lack of time in the early hours of the day or simply not being used to eating before a workout. Upon awakening from a night's rest, we are dehydrated and our glycogen (energy ) stores are depleted. Going into a workout under fueled and dehydrated can result in a higher than normal heart rate with decreased performance. Starting a workout with fuel in the tank will help with energy levels and help prevent fatigue. Here are a couple of examples of fuel for an early “wake and train” session up to 90 minutes: - One banana or apple with 1 TBS of peanut butter - Base Performance Bar - 16oz of sports drink - Small bowl of oatmeal (make ahead the night before ) - Toast with a little jam and peanut butter - A smoothie Early morning fueling takes some experimenting to find what works best for you. With proper fueling you will have more productive workout by starting with a full tank of fuel and optimal hydration. Dial in the nutrition, dial in the performance. "You have to be willing to suffer to get to the other side." @davidgoggins Today's run was brutal. For the past two weeks I've been suffering off and on with a strain in my right trapezius muscle and some days I wake up and can only turn my head to the right. Other days I woke up and there's absolutely nothing wrong. Today was a bad day. However, I was not going to allow a little pain from achieving my goal of completing IMVR 26. There have been 26 events in 27 weeks and I've done them all. Next weekend I believe is the final event, and I'm doing the 3-Day IMVR 27 Kona Classic Division. On Friday I'll swim 2.4 miles in the pool. Saturday, air quality permitting, I'll be cycling around Sacramento for 112 miles. Then Sunday I'll be running 26.2 in my very flat, but very sunny, neighborhood, again depending on the air quality. If the air quality is bad, it'll be @gozwift for 112 miles and my treadmill for 26.2. Where there's a will, there's a way. Just two days ago my wife said to me, "You know you're obsessed with your training." Bear Lake Brawl 140.6–The RUN 🏃🏽‍♀️ 26.2 miles- I got to transition and had a hard time taking off all my gear and everywhere was Drenched 💦 I had all my stuff in garbage bags so I had some nice new dry socks to put on with dry running shoes 🥰 my feet were wet so I did my best to dry them off with my cycling jacket where there was a dry spot. I decided to put chaffing cream all over my feet before putting socks in case we got bad weather again. I was low on sodium so I grabbed one of my electrolyte drink mixes and just squirted it in my mouth! Yep straight salt! 😆🤮I had a water bottle next to me so I was able to wash it down. Shoes on l, race belt on, nutrition stuffed in my kit, I was ready! I got up and ran to use the bathroom right out of transition before I started. Holy disgusting! Triathletes are Nasty!! I survived and got out of there quick! I started on my way!! First few miles were lovely the SUN ☀️ was finally out and I was feeling pretty good! Mile 4, Dawn came by in her car to cheer me on and check on me. My ITBand was starting to bug me! 🥴 I knew I wouldn’t be able to make it much longer without putting my ITBAND strap ON. I stretched for a second, took some Tylenol, put on the strap and was back on my way! Oh that thing is a lifesaver!! 🙏🏼 I am so glad I brought it with me! I wasn’t sure what to expect since my longest run was a month before that and it was ONLY 13 miles! 😱😱 I was hoping it wouldn’t hurt until after 13 miles but it came on quick probably because of everything beforehand and the weather! First 13.1 went pretty smooth I just kept my HR low so I didn’t experience tummy issues. And since the sun ☀️ had finally come out I was actually getting too hot almost! I made it back to my special needs bag and chugged some Dr Pepper 😋 and put some anti inflammatory cream on my knees then I was back on my way! About a mile in the wind started picking back up. I was running in a headwind. At mile 16 I could see the storm moving in! The wind was getting stronger! It was hard to run in! 1.5 miles before the turn around the rain began pelting me with the 30mph+ wind gusts! —CONTINUED IN COMMENTS 🥰🥰

Bear Lake Brawl 140.6–The BIKE 🚴🏽‍♀️ 112 miles: As I sat down in Transition I stared at all of my gear wondering what I should or shouldn’t wear! The rain hadn’t started yet.. it was only a 50% chance... 🤔 I threw on my base layer tank, and cycling jacket, two pairs of socks 🧦 one being wool, my sexy pink booties that @imkinsie let me borrow over top my pink cycling shoes. My nutrition was already stuffed in my jacket so I was good there. Threw on my headband and helmet and started the long rocky dirt run out of transition. Hopped onto my bike and within a minute I realized.... CRAP I FORGOT TO PUT MY GLOVES 🧤 ON!! 😱😱 I wasn’t going back now! It was time to go! First 18 miles of the ride were pretty smooth sailing! After I warmed up I was able to take advantage of the tail wind and pedaled hard. Mile 18.5 crosswind started and the rain 🌧 began!! Then mile 20 I turned with the head wind and the rain got harder and it got colder!! By mile 30 everything hurt!! My lower back and legs aches so bad it hurt to pedal. My hands and feet were wet and frozen! I couldn’t grab my nutrition. I was able to grab my sandwich bag out of my back pocket that I put lays potato chips in. I wrapped the bag around one set of fingers and they slowly started to un thaw enough that I could put it up to my mouth and lick a few chips out of the bag! I kept doing this all the way around the lake switching hands to try to warm them up. I was able to see my awesome friend and Sherpa @dawnawanna at mile 35 where she rang her cowbell and cheered me on! I finally go ahead the first 56 miles and pulled over at my special needs bag to see what I remembered to pack in there! A volunteer held my bike as I wobbled over to my bag! Everyone looked at me and said “ Are you ok?!! “ I said NOPE I hurt everywhere! Ha!! And laughed at myself like usual! I grabbed my Dr Pepper and peanut butter sandwich and they helped me open it up since my hands were numb! I guzzled that down, took some Tylenol and scarfed the sandwich down. I was basically only able to eat chips the first lap! I spent about 7 min stretching and eating and talking myself into going out again! —CONTINUED IN COMMENTS 🥰

A J O U R N E Y to 140.6 Miles Begins With a Decision to T R I. Some sessions are ⭐️ Stars ✨ and some sessions are Stones, but in the end they are all rocks and we build upon them! 15ish weeks left until I embark on another 140.6 miles 🏊🏽‍♀️🚴🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️of fun! This training has been a bit different with struggles, trials, or setbacks. I am just now starting to work on my running again (plantar fasciitis was and is not nice ) and almost feel like I’m starting from ground zero but I’m not giving up! One thing I promised myself is that it didn’t matter how many runs I did a week at least one of them had to be in the mountains enjoying the trails!
