A story for your Monday! . This little guy was once bitten by a brown recluse spider. Right on the butt when he crawled into a sleeping bag. It was so painful and mortifying he still doesn’t like spiders, even as a grown-ass 30-year-old man. Poor buddy, amirite? . At least it wasn’t a radioactive spider! New episode out Wednesday.

In Alone in Their Loss, @elizabethbenton shared with me how alone and unsupported she felt by the medical community when she left the hospital after her 2-week old daughter passed away. Her body was still telling her that she was a mother, yet she had no baby to feed. ⠀ ⠀ A similar experience happened to my guest from last season, Autumn Campbell. In the episode, When Stillness Silences Grief, she described the harm of the hospital as she delivered her son Zion stillborn and then was sent home with no instructions on how to care for her body and no warning that she would experience empty arms syndrome. That was nearly 20 years ago. How are we not doing better by mothers?⠀ ⠀ I appreciate the honesty, courage, and insights Elizabeth offered all of us in this episode. I have already heard from many of you that you feel the same way.⠀ ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ ⠀ ⭐️ If you found this episode reflective of your story or validating of your experience, instructive on how to show up for a friend or family member in the wake of a #infantloss , or meaningful in some other way, please take a few moments to rate the show and write a review on Apple Podcasts. You can also drop me a DM too.⠀ ⠀ 🎧 Episode available NOW on your favorite podcast platform or check out the link in my bio.

The experience of losing their daughter has brought @elizabethbenton and her husband Chris closer together and crystal clear on their commitment to growing a large family and for always being the type of people who show up for others in their grief.⠀ ⠀ Still, my guest Elizabeth was open and honest about their different grief styles and how that's showing up in their day to day lives.⠀ ⠀ This episode, Alone in Their Grief, is available now on your favorite podcast platform or check out the link in my bio!

#onthepod : don’t let comparison thieve your joy, babes. We don't even know if words for this description are even in a space to step into the mecca that this episode may change your view of yourself. Mark our words- this is the most vulnerable podcast thus far, we are giving you a chance to feel heard while discussing what fucks us up the most- our self comparison with the self that we see when you look in the mirror, the constant battle of what feels like home and the perception of in person and on the internet. We discuss triggered topics that may land you into a world of feelings and we want to let you know that we are discussing these topics to help you understand the dynamic of your inner power, in your inner badass babe and even the ways that we've currently pulled ourselves out of the darkness.  We are so proud of you for the ability for you to be honest, for you to heal, and for you to progress to be a better (not fucking perfect ) but improved version of yourself and trust us when we say that we aren't therapists but we are in the trenches with vulnerabilities every day, even when we are fighting the battle to love. Thank you to some amazing babes @myselflovesupply & @theselflovesociety_ for some great quotes & tips this week! #stopcomparing #selflove #bodydysmorphia #becomingbetter #babeaf #formerathlete #loveyourself #onedayatatime #weloveyou #bettereveryday #letsdothis #hereforyou #selfcare #selflovejourney #babessupportingbabes #babesofinstagram #loveauthentic #austinladypods #womeninbusiness #womenpodcasters #theeverygirl #podcastbabes #babegang #womeninpodcasting #austinpodcasters #texascheck #letushelpyou #love #givegrace

In this episode, Alone in Their Loss with @elizabethbenton , Elizabeth shares how she is navigating the early months of her loss. She shared a mantra she says to herself on the darkest days, when she doesn't want to get out of bed.⠀ ⠀ "Grief can ride, but it can't drive". ⠀ ⠀ I can't get that out of my head since we sat down for our conversation. I learned so much from my new friend. I am grateful for her openness and directness in talking not only about the actual experience of losing her 2-week old daughter, Dagney but also about how she and her husband Chris are supporting each other while at the same time having very different grieving styles.⠀ ⠀ Show available on your favorite podcast platform or check out the link in my bio!

Her warmth, thoughtfulness, and tenderness shone through.⠀ ⠀ Elizabeth is a successful entrepreneur, owner of Primal Potential. An inspirational author of the book Chasing Cupcakes. Host of the wildly popular Primal Potential Podcast. She is passionate about using her own experiences of transformation to help others.⠀ ⠀ She is a wife. She is a friend. And she is a grieving mother who is opening up about the recent loss of her 2-week old daughter Dagney at the beginning of the COVID19 Pandemic. She is sharing her story with all of us because, like me, she believes if we’re going to show up in community and love one another through the pain of loss, we have to speak openly and honestly about it all.⠀ ⠀ LISTEN NOW to Alone in Their Loss with Elizabeth Benton. One of my favorite types of responses I receive through emails, DMs, and reviews on Apple Podcast are the ones where people share how much they felt validated, seen or understood. The message is something along the lines of "Thank you for sharing X's story. There was so much said that I could relate to, and I've never heard other people talk about it/admit it/share it. It made me feel less alone, and even hopeful."⠀ ⠀ In Season 2, I'm bringing you a lot more stories than Season 1 AND I'm working very hard and intentionally to make sure I'm bringing you an even wider range of stories and guests so that regardless of the circumstances of your grief, you can feel seen too!⠀ ⠀ 👇🏼 If you have a suggestion for either specific topics or specific guests, drop me a DM or send me a note at info @reimagininggrief .com

Today's Reminder: Intention versus Impact 101.⠀ ⠀ This is one of the biggest complaints we the grievers have about people showing up and trying to offer us grief support. ⠀ ⠀ ✅ Yes, we appreciate you showing up (a lot of people haven't ).⠀ ✅ Yes, we appreciate your intention to make us feel better.⠀ 🆇 No, it did not have that effect.⠀ ⠀ When someone is raw in the pain of their grief, they don't need you to make them feel better (nor can you ). What we need is to feel less alone, feel supported, feel affirmed, feel held, and seen.⠀ ⠀ 🎧 In What I've Learned So Far, the Season 2 premiere episode of Grief is a Sneaky Bitch, I explore the top myths of grief support and where else that wisdom applies. It is really an honor of a lifetime to have the opportunity to sit down with people, many of whom I’ve never met before, and invite them to share the stories of how loss has transformed their lives. ⠀ ⠀ Each conversation is completely unscripted, except for my opening question, so I never know where the conversation will lead.⠀ ⠀ Every single conversation teaches me something about my own grief journey, about how I might show up better for friends and clients in their grief, and invites me into the curious, compassionate side of my spirit. My hope is that each guest feels held, cared for, and that the conversation teaches them something new about their own grief.⠀ ⠀ In the opening episode of Season 2 of Grief is a Sneaky Bitch, I didn’t have a guest to chat with. I am talking directly to you, my audience. I’m answering questions you may have been wondering about me since we last connected at the end of Season 1.⠀ ⠀ Please listen now to see what I’ve learned and where Season 2 is headed, including a preview of some of the incredible conversations I’ve already had, like the one dropping next week with @elizabethbenton .⠀ ⠀ 🎧 The podcast is available on all your favorite platforms or at the link in my bio.

✨I want to invite you to SAY THEIR NAME and ONE QUALITY you loved most about your person. Please share in the comments below 👇🏼✨⠀ ⠀ I am reminded again and again how challenging it is to feel like we are the only one who is carrying our loved ones' memories forward, how alienating this experience can be. This is true when we are surrounded by people who knew us and them in the BEFORE chapter of our lives. We become self-conscious about whether or not we are bringing them up “too much”, are others assuming we aren’t “moving on” or “doing well” because we still talk about them. It can also be true when we are around people we have only known in the AFTER chapter of our lives. They can’t see how much that person was integral to our lives, so might they be wondering why we are still bringing them up? I know your love for them is real. Your love for them lives on. They are a part of you forever. They make up a part of you and I would never ask you to hide that or give that up. ⠀ 🎧Don’t forget, the newest episode of Grief is a Sneaky B!tch is out NOW!🎧 It’s Out of Order, a conversation with Pediatric Palliative Social Worker Rachel Carnahan is available now. ✨FOLLOW @reimagininggrief for more #dailyinvitations .✨⠀ ⠀ I woke up this morning with Eric on my mind. That isn’t unusual. What is sitting in my heart this morning is my gratitude for what he brought into my life, not so much his absence. ⠀ ⠀ In his life, he had a way of smiling at me and anyone he was in a deep conversation with (which is something he liked to do often ) that made it impossible to not smile back. He complimented my smile often, which made me come to appreciate the gummy-looking smile I had always been a bit embarrassed by. ⠀ ⠀ He was always game to try new things, which when he joined my family meant he had to learn SCUBA diving and skiing. Two things he did right away and with mastery (honestly a bit frustrating that after doing them both my whole life, he was better than me in a year, lol ).⠀ ⠀ And love. What he taught me about love could fill volumes. Not just romantic love, though we had that to be sure. His actions and his words modeled what it means to love and do the work of love in this life.⠀ ⠀ So I found myself thinking this morning, I carry Eric’s memory forward every time I smile. He is with me every time I am engaging in loving kindness with the people in my life. He is by my side each time I try something new (which is a lot these days ).⠀ ⠀ I think the universe knew I needed an extra reminder of that. Just now, as I was in line for my morning coffee, I look up to see the gentleman in line ahead of me @stouthauscoffee looked remarkably like him…and that made me smile.⠀ ⠀ How will you carry what your loved one taught you throughout this day? Today the podcast is ~official~ and available on all podcast platforms (: Click the link in the bio to listen 🎧⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I started this podcast, I wanted to break down the stereotypes of what WOC should be. I wanted to celebrate WOC as the complex, dynamic, resilient, rule-breaking, beauties they are. Each of these conversations is about self-discovery and how our cultural identities, our upbringing, and experiences shape us into who we are today. I hope we can encourage WOC to throw away what they "should" be and be able to step into their own. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Very fittingly, the first episode dips into inner child work with holistic psychotherapist @fernybarcelo Never heard of it? You'll learn!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Make sure you keep an eye out for our giveaway tomorrow. After you listen to the podcast episode, comment below with your thoughts!

Did you know grief dreams are a thing? ⠀ ⠀ Over the past 8 years, I have had all sorts of dreams about Eric and even my friend Joe who I lost a few years later. As I’ve shared before, in the early months and years I tended to have the same dream over and over again. We found each other, realized it had all been a terrible mistake, he wasn’t really dead, and we went on to celebrate. But inevitably within the dream, I would realize he really was dead, then wake up to the reality that in fact he was gone. Even then, those dreams were such a mixed blessing because, on the one hand, I got to see his face, hear his voice, sense his presence so clearly. That part was such a gift. The devastation of realizing he was gone was in some ways tempered by the moments of joy I felt being with him again. In the intervening years, I have had a few dreams where we were both aware he was gone, but neither of us would focus on that, we would just luxuriate in each other’s company for as long as the dream would last. Those dreams were infrequent but they brought me so much joy.⠀ ⠀ Last night I had a new hybrid type of dream. We were exploring a magical destination, laughing and giggling, and in awe of what we were seeing. We couldn’t believe our eyes. You have to know that Eric was our memory keeper, he was amazing at recalling details…a trait my daughter now displays. At the moment I said to him, “oh my gosh I want to remember all of this, I’m afraid I’m going to forget.” He said, “don’t worry I will remember for us.” Then it hit me. He didn’t know he was dead. Before I knew what I was doing I told him, “but you can’t remember for us babe, you’re gone.” His body slumped and his face expressed so much sadness. His heart was heavy and he simply said “I’m sorry I left.” I have never cried harder in a dream than I did last night and even now as I write these words I’m overcome with emotion. ⠀ ⠀ 🎧🎧 Don’t forget to tune into Naming The Loss, the latest #podcast episode of Grief is a Sneaky B!tch out NOW. ✨🎙🎧NEW PODCAST EPISODE ALERT. The latest episode of Grief is a Sneaky B!tch at ➡️LINK IN BIO or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts!⠀ ⠀ ⠀ In this episode, I was joined by @_ryanbouman and @jankemichael , two filmmakers out of Calgary. They recently released a powerful short-form documentary film on grief called We, The Bereaved @wethebereavedfilm . In this meditation on grief, their goal was to show solidarity for those who are grieving and permission for those who felt they were never allowed.⠀ ⠀ I discovered these #filmmakers and this #shortfilm thanks to #kristatippett of @onbeing , who shared the film. ⠀ From the beginning of our conversation, Ryan and Michael demonstrated deep vulnerability. Both men shared their initial trepidation about taking on the awesome responsibility of telling other people’s grief story. They revealed how tackling this topic was a shift from their more commercial work and how it challenged them to think, act and structure the entire process in a new way. ⠀ ⠀ Their approach to conveying the stories of the 10 individuals they captured on film was a beautiful example of what ideal grief support looks like. They showed up, they let go of any direction or sense of authority, and they just listened.⠀ ⠀ The impact of their choices on the film was profound. You can feel how much the bereaved felt safe and supported to share both their experiences and the wisdom they’ve gained on their journeys. The outcome for these filmmakers has been a deeper confidence in showing up for themselves and others in their grief journey.

✨FOLLOW @reimagininggrief for more #dailyinvitations .✨⠀ ⠀ I have only scratched the surface of Ram Dass’ work, but I am grateful for what I have uncovered. His passing yesterday meant a flurry of videos and quotes flooded my feed and I was so grateful for the invitation to reconnect and continue to explore the wisdom he shared in his embodied time on this earth.⠀ ⠀ Though he worked in hospice settings, and spoke often about grief, this particular message about silence touched my soul last night. I have a very special friend who I have come to admire greatly. We have had curious and thoughtful conversations about the power of silence to find deep connection within and how it is what allows our deep connections with others. Though our conversations fill me with excitement and wonder, some of the favorite moments we’ve shared have been sitting in silence, together. What a gift.⠀ ⠀ Silence seems like it will be a rare commodity for many of us as we gather together with family and friends over the holidays. If you’re like me, you may be at once looking forward to catching up and yet dreading a bit the pressure to talk, perform, or listen. As we join in celebration with our loved ones, don’t be afraid to seek silence, whether that is stealing away time for yourself or inviting those around you to share in silent meditation. I think it might just be the most valuable gift you can give others and yourself over the holidays.⠀ ⠀ I plan to put this into practice myself. I will let you know how it goes!
