Thrilled with this new avant garde massive ring. It is a hand crafted glass mini sculpture that sits over a double ring in brass. Though was challenging encasing the sculpture, i was pleased with the result. I like the linear design. Found this kaolin pipe bowl while creek walking several weeks ago, but haven’t posted it because I can’t determine the age, history or maker other than the obvious Masonic symbolism. I’m guessing 1830s-1840s. If anyone has expertise with these pipes please chime in. #kaolinpipe #pipe #masonic #creekwalking #history #artifact

With #SpookySeason well underway, we have an artifact with a strange past from our collections @mohistlibrary to share! . General Morgan was an American politician, pioneer, and soldier during the American Revolutionary War. He died in 1802 and was buried in Virginia. However, in 1868 his remains were reinterred. Then, in 1920, this coffin handle was donated to the Missouri Historical Society by a seemingly unrelated individual living in St. Louis. It's a mystery as to how an individual living here in the early 20th century came to have this memento from Virginia. . . . #CoffinHandle #Coffin #1800s #WeirdHistory #HalloweenSeason #Artifact #Collections #MOHistLibrary #MOHistoryMuseum

Ceramic head, Tumaco-La Tolita culture, Ecuador 300 B.C. The Chorrera art style developed from the Valdivia tradition and spread throughout the southern coastal and adjacent inland regions. This was a time of social, political, economic, and artistic innovations prompted by agricultural improvements and a growing population. New settlements and towns, with ever-larger numbers of inhabitants, triggered the need for methods to manage village life and ensure the well-being of the community, which, in turn, led to greater social hierarchy. Hand-in-hand with the growing social complexity was the appearance of more complex religious practices. Both developments encouraged the desire for novel artworks to express the new sociopolitical and spiritual ideologies that characterize this dynamic time throughout ancient Ecuador. At this time, the earlier Valdivia figurine tradition developed into an elaborate figural art form with such novel artistic expressions as the elegant, mold-made sculptures of the Jama Coaque and La Tolita styles of Ecuador's northwestern coastal region. This example likely pertains to the La Tolita style, which is differentiated by its heightened naturalism. Niello is a black material, usually a mixture of sulphur, copper, silver and lead that was used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal starting in bronze age Syria, around 1800 BC.⠀ ⠀ In general #niello is not used today (lead in pieces which touch ones skin is undesirable for obvious reasons ). But most of the Anglo-Saxon #runic #rings used niello in recessed areas.⠀ ⠀ I've been revisiting some of my #replicas and experimenting with various techniques to reproduce the contrast of a niello finish. Really liking the way these are turning out which means I have some photography to redo. ⠀ ⠀ Related aside I'm at the tail end of a run of 130 Kingmoor and Bramham moor rings in brass and silver, order one and your ring should ship within a few days.⠀ ⠀ #anglosaxon #runicring #ring #ancientjewelry #oldgold #artifact #historicring #historicwedding #band #weddingband #regeneration #healing

Vintage Early German Halloween Parade Lantern In 1991, Germany was forced to cancel their Fasching celebrations due to the Golf War. Money became a bit tight in Germany due to the loss of this holiday’s revenue, but Dieter Tschorn, a public relations consultant for the German Toy and Novelty Retailers Association, insisted that introducing Halloween into the country could make up for lost sales among customers and retailers. Because of this brazen move, Tschorn is now honoured as the father of German Halloween. Items such as this vintage Halloween parade lantern symbolizes the earliest form of German Halloween celebrations, and it was sold on eBay in October 2020 for $1,724.99 USD. #findersfinds #finding #discover #discovery #artifact #artefact #antique #history #historical #collectable #collectible #vintage #retro #halloween #spooky #scary #creepy #pumpkin #lantern #jackolantern #horror #german #germany

Tattoo patterns from Timor . These drawings of tattoo motifs were made in West Timor sometime before 1862 by a woman named Raboe, and today are in the collection of the Museum Volkenkunde (RV-26-37 ). The information in the public museum database does not identify where Raboe lived, to which ethnic group she belonged, or what the designs are called. . Relatively little is recorded about the traditional tattoo practices the Lesser Sunda islands, all of which are threatened by modernization and centuries of colonialism & oppression. Generally, both men and women were tattooed, although in some areas the practice was more prevalent in women. One account notes that in East Nusa, women were tattooed on their stomachs during pregnancy to insure their rapid recovery and the health and that of the baby. In 1964, cross-like designs on the hands and faces of older Atoni women were said to be used to trade for fire in the afterworld. . In Timor-Leste tattooing was traditionally done at funerals, where the entire family, both living and dead, came together to honor the deceased. The tattooing was done using ink made from soot mixed with water, or in some places molasses, and pricked into the skin with citrus thorns. . For more on these traditions, see the work of the Dili Collective at the4thwall.net ( @fa .fa.fa.fa.fa ), and Leokoy (2018 ) “An Analysis of Traditional Tattoo (Lunat ) used by People in Baus Village, Booking District, South Central Timor Regency (A Semiotic Study ).” . #tattoo #tattoos #tattoohistory #artifact #traditionaltattooing #tatu #tatau #tattootools #tahiti #indigenousink #timorleste #timor #timortattoo

Statue of the monk Kūya with figures emerging from his mouth, Japan Kamakura period, from 1215 C.E. Kūya (903-972 ) was a mendicant monk, best remembered for bringing the chant *Namu Amida Butsu* to Japan from China. It means "Hail", the Buddha of Infinite Light. Coming out of his mouth are six tiny sculptures of Amitābha, each representing a word in the chant. Kūya regarded the words as a sort of magical incantation, and allegedly performed miracles with it. A gong is strapped to his chest, which he strikes with the hammer in his right hand when preaching to the masses. In his left hand is an antler staff. This sculpture is kept in Rokuharamitsu-ji temple in Kyoto. The sculptor is Kōshō of the Kei school Follow 👉 @history .caffe 👈for more incredible artifacts and their stories behind I I I #historians #historylesson #unknownhistory #unknownfacts #ancientcivilization #buddhism #history #ancient #artifact #artifacts #artefact #artefacts #statue #statues #historybuffs #kamakura #statuecollectors #archives #archaeology #learning #arts #historylover #historylovers #monk #japanhistory #japanese #kyoto #kosho #amitabhbachchan #kuya

Look closely and zoom in! Notice anything interesting about this portrait of Peter Ewer (1800-55 )? Painted by William Swain (1803-47 ), originally of Newburyport, he was the most prolific and sought-after portrait painter on Nantucket during the second quarter of the nineteen century. He established his first studio here in 1824 and worked on island until his death in 1847. Swain’s portrait of Ewer presents his sitter’s remarkable four-pointed diamond tattoo. The exact origin of the tattoo is unknown. It has been conjectured that the twenty-five-year-old Ewer may have acquired the tattoo on a whaling voyage, perhaps on his father’s whaleships, but no record of such a voyage exists. The diamond-like figure in the middle of Ewer’s brow resembles the Southern Cross, the ever-present cluster of stars in the southern latitudes. Later owners of the painting had the tattoo painted over, not to be discovered until conservation on the painting was undertaken in 1997.

Two German infantrymen rest by a knocked out Soviet heavy tank KV-1s possibly from the “Kuibyshev Kolkhoznik” column. Eastern Front, 1943. . NOW HEAR THIS: As the 5 year anniversary of my account being founded approaches, the idea of where I want to take this account and my future continues to wane heavily on my mind. As a believer in transparency, I’m here to share my intentions with you. I hope to, by 2021, have a website up and running where I can continue to spread and share the history of the Second World War with a wider audience. That’s not to say this Instagram will be shut down, I plan on keeping both up and running. With that said, the hope is that eventually the website will become successful enough for it to be my primary focus and something you all can enjoy. Wether it will be free with ads or subscription based I’ve yet to decide. Instagram and social media as a whole are becoming more and more political every second. History accounts have been suffering from shadow bans, censorship, and some even having their accounts deleted. This is one of the main reasons I’ve decided to try and start up this website. For the first time in 5 years, my account on Instagram is no longer safe. With this said, I plan to keep posting as much as possible for as long as possible. Tuscany's Excalibur...the real thing? . One of the most famous British legends is that of King Arthur and the sword in the stone. According to the various versions of the story, the sword could only be pulled out of the stone by the true king of England. A similar, though much less well-known, story can be found in the Italian region of Tuscany, and has even been suggested by some as the inspiration for the British legend. This is the sword in the stone of San Galgano. . Galgano Guidotti, a noble from Chiusdano, near Siena, allegedly split this stone with his sword in 1180 after renouncing war to become a hermit. For centuries the sword was assumed to be a fake, but research has revealed that its metal does date to the twelfth century. Carbon-dating confirmed that two mummified hands in the same chapel at Montesiepi were also from the twelfth century. Legend has it that anyone who tried to remove the sword had their arms ripped out. . Only the hilt, wooden grip and a few inches of the 3ft blade poke from the hill, which still draws pilgrims and tourists to the ruins of the chapel built around it. . . 🔊 Follow: @ancientdestinations ▶️ #ancientdestinations ▶️ www.ancientdestinations.com

Axe of Pharaoh Ahmes I This is the ceremonial axe of King Ahmes and is roughly 3600 years old. This gold ceremonial axe was discovered among the treasures in the Tomb of Ahmes in Dra Abu El Naga. It is funerary object that was not used in the life of the pharaoh. It is admired for the gilded cedar wood handle and its copper blade. One of the sides of the blade is adorned with some scenes for Heh, god of infinite space, Nekhbet, vulture goddess and the guardian of Upper and Lower Egypt, and other deities who are supposed to protect the pharaoh. The other side of the plade depicts the pharaoh tormenting one of his enemies as a symbol for sovereign power, topped with some cartouches with the names and titles of Ahmes, and another depiction of a winged sphinx representing the pharaoh him Follow 👉 @history .caffe 👈 for more incredible artifacts and their stories behind I I I #history #historied #museum #museums #archives #ancient #artifacts #beyondhistory #historybuffs #historians #explored #pharaoh #historylover #historylovers #lovehistory #selftaught #learn #newthings #learning #precious #artifact #artifacts #ancient #antiques #rarity #archeology #egypt #ancientegypt #egyptology #egyptian #ancientgods #tomb
