How many times have you wondered, "where do I need to start to create change?" A lot of my learners jump straight to the transformation phase of change because they want to do something about injustice as soon as possible. I get it. The issue, however, is that they don't realize the mistake of skipping over some some critical steps. • • • When I first started teaching with a focus on social change during my Ph.D. program, I made the same mistake of rushing towards solutions because I thought that's what my students needed most. They were always asking me what organizations to join, what policies to support, and who they should be voting for. But after my first semester of leading my own class of undergraduates, I realized that what they needed most was space to deprogram their understanding and commitment to injustice. Because even the change seekers who had the best intentions, still had a LOT of (un )learning to do in order to advance real justice. They didn't need to focus on creating change out there when they were still contributing to oppression though their attitudes and actions. They needed to 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣 so they could be an effective change agent for the long-term. I developed this framework for activating change to help people understand the importance of the inner work we need to do first if we want to create meaningful changes in our external institutions and comminities. I'll be teaching about this and more later this month in the 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 learning group. To join and begin learning with an accountable community, CLICK THE LINK in my bio to COMPLETE YOUR APPLICATION and secure your spot today. I'm so ready for us to get started and end 2020 empowered! This will be the LAST immersive learning experience with me for 2020 so don't miss it if you're ready to find your focus in justice advocacy. • • • LET ME HEAR FROM YOU! What phase of this cycle do you need the most help with? What are some ways that you are already RETHINKING, CONFRONTING, AND TRANSFORMING INJUSTICE in your daily life? Share your insights below to help someone else who may need guidance.⤵️⤵️

I don't know what else to say. Teachers & educators are required to be everything. BIPOC are expected to teach & lead #antiracist efforts. We expect our teachers to educate students & parents & others, especially if they hold a marginalized identity. We are asking so much & I hear pretty regularly they are burnt out, tired, scared. We have to do better. We need to reinvision education. We need to do more than what's been done before. Support teachers. Listen to teachers. Honor teachers. Empower teachers.

Perspective is everything... What you call a “loss”... Someone sees an opportunity... What you think is failing... Someone sees as “learning “... I have loss so much in my life... I have failed more times than I can count... MIDSET IS EVERYTHING... When you can find the lesson in a loss you turn into a winner... When you can improve from your failures you become a winner...

I didn’t always love these curls. ⁣ ⁣ I used to blow dry them, flat iron them, beg them to stay straight. ⁣ ⁣ For all of high school, I wouldn’t leave the house unless my curls were concealed because I didn’t want them announcing my Blackness in spaces where I didn’t feel safe enough to be my truest self. ⁣ ⁣ I’m sharing much more about my #selflovejourney in my stories today. Opening up about many things that I’ve never shared publicly before. ⁣ ⁣ Well, I did the #bigchop almost 10 years ago, which means it’s been almost a decade of living my life in all honesty. ⁣ ⁣ Now, I can look in the mirror and appreciate these curls in all their glory. ⁣ ⁣ What’s one thing about yourself that you’re learning to love?

Early vote!!! Y’all, if you’re not quite sure about absentee ballots with everything happening with the USPS, early voting is a great option! I was in & out in less than ten minutes for Dekalb County in Georgia. Everything felt super efficient and safe. 💯 I voted for human rights, for women’s rights, for black lives, for our future and for basic human decency. I voted as a minority Asian woman. I voted for RBG. I voted for humanity and kindness. I voted for us all. ❤️ Have you voted yet? 🗳 ✅ . . . . . #atlanta #yoga #yogaispolitics #wearamask #dothework #blacklivesmatter #socialjustice #racism #antiracism #reflection #educateyourself #getuncomfortable #takeaction #action #socialactivism #learning #unlearn #rbg #iamprivileged #fuckracism #freedom #dothework #enddiscrimination #morethanasana #votehimout #blacklivesstillmatter #antiracist #activism #vote2020 #vote #useyourvoice

Vote like love depends on it, like saving lives depends on it, like children’s futures depends on it, like black lives depends on it, like curtailing climate change depends on it. Cause it does. Your voice matters. Make it heard. We need you to vote more than ever. ANGELA DAVIS says in an interview with Amy Goodman: “Well, my position really hasn’t changed. I’m not going to actually support either of the major candidates. But I do think we have to participate in the election. I mean, that isn’t to say that I won’t vote for the Democratic candidate. What I’m saying is that in our electoral system as it exists, neither party represents the future that we need in this country. Both parties remain connected to corporate capitalism. But the election will not so much be about who gets to lead the country to a better future, but rather how we can support ourselves and our own ability to continue to organize and place pressure on those in power. And I don’t think there’s a question about which candidate would allow that process to unfold. So I think that we’re going to have to translate some of the passion that has characterized these demonstrations into work within the electoral arena, recognizing that the electoral arena is not the best place for the expression of radical politics. But if we want to continue this work, we certainly need a person in office who will be more amenable to our mass pressure. And to me, that is the only thing that someone like a Joe Biden represents. But we have to persuade people to go out and vote to guarantee that the current occupant of the White House is forever ousted.“ #vote #gotv #vote2020 #bidenharris2020 #angeladavis #amygoodman #democracy #antiracist

Entrepreneurship can be life altering for better or for worse. Make sure you go in prepared and protected. Behold, 6 must haves before starting a business: 1. A realistic personal budget. When you’re an entrepreneur, everyone gets paid before you do. Make sure that you are financially prepared for that reality. 2. Money in the bank. The verdict is out on the exact length, but 6-12 months of expenses bare minimum in the bank is a good place to start. If you’re able to rely on the income from a day job or your spouse you can skip this step but regardless of your situation, you will need to save before you start. Another great alternative is small business financing. There are many options to consider, from debt financing to sharing equity to government grants. Understand the differences between each kind of financing, and be sure you're prepared to deal with the obligations of whichever ones you choose. 3. Choose a form of business ownership (sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation ) and register for GST/HST. If you are bringing in more than $30K, GST/HST registration is mandatory and if your income is more than $80,000, you should consider incorporation for tax reasons. 4. A sales and marketing strategy. People need to know who you are. How do you plan on letting them know? And once people know who you are and what you do, you’ll need a solid plan in place to close deals. 5. A pre-nup or post nup Many marriages and relationships are unable to survive a startup. Make sure that you’re protected so that you don’t lose your business along with your relationship. 6. Stamina. Entrepreneurship is a marathon. Make sure you've got the energy to put in the necessary work before you begin. Post by @TorontoShay with info sourced from Inc.com

"The Indian Tipi" by Gladys Wìyaka Wastewin and Reginald Tatanka Wanjila Laubin is a great read on a White couple who leaves the comfort and privilege of their colonial lives and goes to study and live with Indigenous peoples in the great plains. This is not only a recount of the Indigenous knowledge and expierence they learned, but a fantastic retelling of their journey of decolonizing and allyship aswell. Truly an example for anyone wanting to further their journey of antiracism and working with Indigenous peoples. The perfect combination of Indigenous teachings, decolonizing, and White allyship. Thriftbooks.com and Dealoz.com are great websites for affordable, secondhand books. Both of these stores have multiple copies instock online. ---------------------------- Shileátiju!❤🤍💙💛 I've created this page @decolonial_daca to bring voice to Indigenous people and the issues facing our community. Home ownership is getting worse for Black Americans.According to the Wall Street Journal. "This divergence marks the first time in more than two decades that Hispanics and blacks, the two largest racial or ethnic minorities in the U.S., are no longer following the same path when it comes to owning homes.⠀ ⠀ Analysts say black communities have struggled to recover financially since the housing crisis, which has kept homeownership out of reach. A decades long legacy of housing segregation has also made many would-be black buyers wary of returning to the market after losing their homes.⠀ ⠀ “We can see that discrimination is still there, although it has changed its form,” said Michela Zonta, a senior policy analyst at the Center for American Progress.⠀ A study by Ms. Zonta released on Monday also found that higher-income black homeowners are more likely to buy homes in heavily minority neighborhoods that have failed to benefit from the rise in home prices since the foreclosure crisis.⠀ Homes in neighborhoods with a high concentration of white borrowers on average have seen their homes appreciate 3% from 2006 through 2017, according to the study. However, homes in neighborhoods with a concentration of black borrowers on average are worth 6% less than they were in 2006. High-income black borrowers have concentrated in neighborhoods where homes have lost 2% of their value, compared with white borrowers, who have concentrated in neighborhoods where homes have appreciated 5%.⠀ ⠀ #blackhomes #blackhomeownership #blm #equity #antiracist #antiracism #antiracisteducation ⠀ https://buff.ly/2lp4ZyA

Although the African Americans were voting Republican it’s important to know about the great “switch” and know that the Republican and Democrat parties are not the same as they were in the 1920’s. While majority blacks started out voting Republican that changed when Democrats switched sides. It’s also important to know about Goldwater and the Republican Party and how the lost the black vote when they turned their backs on the civil rights movement. Studying history is important. Too many people rely on the news and then go online and debate people with only superficial knowledge. People like Candace Owens knows very little about US History. Funny how they say she should be President. Heck, we have a reality TV star tearing up the country now. Republicans love to say they freed the slaves not knowing (or deceitfully knowing ) that their was a switch in platforms. However, they will continue to hold that title to get clot. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ • • • • #homeschool #homeschooling #church #votersuppression #trump2020 #blm #latinosfortrump #blackconservatives #trumptrain #blacklivesmatter #blacksfortrump #endracism #BidenHarris2020 #alllivesmatter #homeschoolers #policebrutality #antiracism #antiracist #republican #Christianhomeschool #blackhistoryfacts #conservative #homeschoolmoms #orlando #antiracisteducation #homeschoolcommunity #alm #homeschoolmom #discrimination #blackconservative

*(You must register for this free event. The event is on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 3 p.m. CDT – 5 p.m. CDT ) The Real Talk for Real Change symposia series is open to the public and focuses on the critical issues of racial justice in education by centering the voices of UW–Madison scholars of color and community members. Our hope is to share knowledge and facilitate conversations that will equip our UW–Madison and the wider education community to focus on equity in our education policies, curriculum, and practices of teaching and learning. School discipline and policing continue to be characterized by racial disparities that necessitate structural change. The increased call for school safety has resulted in a punitive system that disproportionately negatively impacts Black and brown students, even when the goal of disciplinary policies is to make students of color feel safe. The third installment of the Real Talk for Real Change symposia series, Addressing Inequities in School Policies, Policing, and Discipline Practices, seeks to engage campus, community, and national experts in exploring the complex issues surrounding the subject and promoting action toward creating more equitable and safe environments for students, staff, and faculty in schools. The panel features the following special guests: •Kevin Henry (Professor, UW–Madison Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis ) •Decoteau Irby (Professor, University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Educational Policy Studies ) •Gloria Reyes (President, Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education ) •Corey Saffold (Safety and Security Coordinator, Verona Area School District ) •Ashley White (Professor, UW–Madison Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education ) . . . . . . . . #antiracismeducation #antiracism #antiracisteducation #antiracist #education #lifelonglearning #wisconsin #educationequity #equityineducation #equality #madisonwi #madison #uwmadison

Repost @hisueyun “I’ve never heard an antiracist get defensive when being called a racist. A defensive reaction actually makes sense when you view racists as the extreme (e.g. the KKK ), but racism lives on a broad spectrum. And if you’ve never had to reflect deeply on the experiences of people of color, it can be challenging to grapple with the idea that you might benefit from racism or that you might unintentionally uphold racist beliefs and systems. Does being called a racist mean you’re actually racist? Not necessarily. But it’s time to expand your interpretation of racism so you can truly examine your own belief system.” . . . #Blacklivesmatter #blm #Blacklivesstillmatter #peopleofcolor #womenofcolor #intersectionalfeminism #bethechange #antiracism #antiracist #antiracisteducation #racism #racisminamerica #racialequality #racialjustice #systemicracism #systemicoppression #whiteprivilege #whitesupremacy #whitefragility #dismantlewhitesupremacy #checkyourprivilege #privilege #ladieswhodesign #procreatelettering #handlettering #activistart #quotestagram

Environmental gatekeeping against individuals can be one of the biggest deterrents from spurring on collaborative change. While I am vegan, somewhat zero-waste, have cut down on flying, etc. I realise that I have a lot of privilege and I’m also at a point in my journey now where I’m less fixated on perfectionism and more on collaboration! I think individual action can be really empowering, but we always have to be aware of the optics of gatekeeping and how the system we live in literally uses perfectionism to hoard power. I also believe that we are all on a journey ❤️ comparison can be toxic! Also with all of this we have a new episode out on @badactivistpodcast where we talk about perfectionism and environmental gatekeeping. Bad Activist exists as a space to shed the guise of perfectionism and to have a laugh. This episode’s a good one and you get to learn all about @jugentner ’s wild experience with goats. PLUS we have officially set up a Ko-fi page! (Link in bio ). If you’ve learned anything from us, you can donate as little as £3 to show your support ❤️ this will help with upkeep and compensating guests that come on. Big love to all and let’s work together ✨ Also typo on the last page. It should say if you value our CONVERSATIONS. Jeez, why do I never proof read 🤣

It has been 219 long and trying days since Breonna Taylor was wrongly murdered, yet none of the 3 officers have been officially charged for her murder. 219 days of her loved ones mourning her wrongful death, yet only one officer, Brett Hankison, has been indicted on three counts of wanton endangerment in the first degree for firing blindly into an adjoining apartment that was occupied. No one has been criminally punished for firing the shots that took Breonna’s life. This is not enough; a life of a young black woman was lost, yet the above mentioned charge does not equate to the damage done. Day 14 of #facetober by @charlyclements curly hair/ glasses/ butterfly And you know I have to add my message 😀 We have the power to effect change, and I know most of us want better for each other and the planet. Our movement for change starts from within, and then we take it out into the world. Some of us have to unlearn the things that we have been taught, and we have to learn from those whose voices have been silenced. Right now we have a chance to use our voices by voting. We have a chance to vote against hatred, white supremacy, fascism. It’s not going to be an instant fix, but like I heard somewhere, I rather pick my opponents in this fight for justice. Even after that, there is still so much work to be done to make our world better and to dismantle and reshape the system. Start at home, start in your community, just start...and keep going. We’re in this together. #powertothepeople #fightforyourrights #fightforjustice #votevotevote #dismantlewhitesupremacy #dismantlethepatriarchy #dismantlethesystem #fightforequality #antiracism #antiracist #decolonizeyourmind #illustrationnow #weareillustration #socialjusticewarrior #womenwhoillustrate #procreate5x #theillustrationroom #kidlitwomen #childrenbookart #illustrationworks #editorialillustrations #dopeblackart #friendsofillustration #ladieswhodesign #editorialillustration #femaleillustrator #illustratorofinstagram #blackartists

Day 12 of #facetober by @charlyclements wavy hair/sunglasses/tattoo It’s Indigenous People’s Day today, and as we are coming together to learn more, it’s also important to basically decolonize what we’ve learned. As 45 pushes against recognizing this day on his quest for “patriotic history,” we need to learn history as it happened, not whitewashed, so that we can truly come together and move forward for equality. On this day, and every day, we can be reminded to take the time to learn the true stories of indigenous people and what we can do to amplify their voices. Learn how to help. There are many resources out there, so hopefully you can start your journey today if you haven’t already. Also, I saw an image of a woman holding a sign for Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and it said “Acknowledge, Educate, Celebrate” so I used it in this image. If anyone knows who I can attribute it to, let me know! ❤️ Edited to add: I live in Washington, DC, and have spent most of my life in this area. Washington, DC sits on the ancestral lands of the Anacostans, also known as Nacotchtank, and over time neighboring the Piscataway and Pamunkey peoples. #indigenouspeoplesday #dismantlewhitesupremacy #dismantleracism #representationmatters #antiracism #antiracist #antiracisteducation #fightforyourrights #decolonizeyourmind #illustrationnow #weareillustration #womenwithpencils #womenwhoillustrate #procreate5x #theillustrationroom #childrenwritersguild #kidlitwomen #editorialillustration #kidlitillustration #childrenbookart #illustrationworks #editorialillustrations #friendsofillustration #ladieswhodesign #femaleillustrator #illustratorofinstagram #childrenbookillustration #blackartists
